Respondr theme sneak preview

Working on the new Respondr theme, to be produced next week. It will be built on the awesome new Arctica+Tundra base themes.

New features that come with Respondr:

  • Flexslider with swipe support
  • Scroll to top link
  • Flawless device agnostic user experience
  • Tweet slider
  • Flickr widget

Not sure how I'll implement the flickr integration for the footer block. If there isn't a specialty module available I'll just use Feeds module.

Dropping IE6 support for next generation of themes

Just posting it here as a heads up, the next generation of themes will not support IE6. Time to say goodbye to this legacy browser. _goodbye: ie6;

In the future IE6 will get a simplified version of the website, or maybe even a print stylesheet.

Lots of new themes coming

Currently there are drawings for 5 themes laying on my desk, a sixth theme concept is under development but due to its niche nature its difficult to even figure out how the wireframe should look.

2 themes out of these 6 are 80% done in the designing process. Expect some good stuff on the blog in the coming weeks.
A stable release of the free Tundra theme is still pending finalization of the Skinr 7.x-2.x internals.

Tip: This is a good time to buy a club membership, from here its value will only go up with these new and awesome themes coming to SooperThemes.

Poll: Super-Garland or Supersede it?

edit: from the large number of votes I'd say many people feel strongly about this, feel free to comment if you want to voice your opinion about Garland.

Was just thinking of creating a new free color module theme for Drupal 7.

Garland is very popular but perhaps people have seen enough of it. There is a strong argument for keeping Garland and doing a simple make-over: Garland is a part of the Drupal brand, it's what Drupal looks like out of the box and updating* it could be an easy and value-adding move to Drupal core (Maybe for 7.1 or as a contrib option?).

If I were to start anew I (or we - would love to work together with someone on a theme) could make something with some more flashy graphics and the popular lighting effects** decoration looks like an evolved style of what Garland does:
This could yield a cooler theme that has the similar marketing value to Drupal that Garland had 3 years ago, or it might turn out to be a bridge too far in terms of flashyness and thus not be as popular as Garland.

Creating such a graphically intensive theme would also take about 3 months for me as opposed to 4 weeks for a proper Garland update. Also, I can't get anything done in time for a Drupal 7 release candidate because of my schedule @ university.

Just playing with ideas and checking for animo.

* Adding animated dropdowns, extra regions, Skinr integration, fixed/fluid/sidebar width theme settings etc. etc. Like the drupal themes at my site.

Mega Drop-down in Drupal, is it doable in Seven?

I love the look and feel of mega drop-down menus, but the Drupal menu system does not have an interface that facilitates grouping of links within menus, and it's even more difficult to throw HMTL into the menu that isn't part of the list of links.

Forcing a theme onto the theme settings form

Ok admittedly most developers will never have to use this trick, but if you ever use color module, or any advanced customization through the theme settings API you will want to do some theming on the theme settings page!

My premium drupal themes in fact do a lot of things with the theme settings form, to name a few:

  • Override the color module stuff to modify the color palette
  • Add a bunch of jQuery scripts to enable live preview of color and layout settings (including a cool animation that resizes the container to any fixed or fluid width)
  • Adding stuff to the form that just needs custom styling, like the Cufon fonts overview

A trend is is recently gaining popularity is the admin theme. There are some great admin themes out there, but unfortunately the admin theme will also load on the theme settings page and spoil the configuration features. In Drupal 7, an admin theme is actually standard, so I was worried I was going to have to write a module to force the theme onto the theme settings page, and I think a theme that requires a module to function is not very elegant, neither is it convenient.
